Hockney’s mother was the portrait subject he turned to most. He liked to paint those he knew best, and, in his words, “she was the person I’ve known all my life.” Born Laura Thompson in Bradford, she was a vegetarian and a Methodist, and raised her family on modest means. She was working as an assistant at London Rubber Company in Bradford when she married Kenneth Hockney. Hockney claimed, “It’s a very traditional thing to do, I know, painting one’s parents, but I think it could be a lot more than just that—their predicament, their lack of fulfillment, the desperate-not-knowing what they could have had out of life. And their relationship with me.”
